Android, being such a flexible platform, it’s no surprise that you can find lots of apps for TV, although they tend to be data hungry, they make a good way to kill time. In most of the cases, you won’t have to search on the Android Market for specific TV apps, you can just go online and type the URL of your network and most likely, if you’ve got a powerful enough phone or smartphone, it will redirect you to their own application. But, if you want to watch shows that are abroad or out of your reach, then you should try using the apps from the list below.
Top 10 Android TV Apps
1. Blue Media Television
Television from Blue Media is an Android app that allows you to watch over 40 full screen channels from all over the world. Although it doesn’t have a multitude of features, and it requires a one time payment of $3, you will have lots of channels at your fingertips, and that’s got to count for something, right? So go to the Android Market and give it a try. Better pay for something professional than wasting your time to find something cheap and reliable.
2. SPB TV
SPB TV seems to have everything a good TV streaming app should have: high resolution and low resolution options, TV guide, quick channel preview and many others. It can run over Wi-Fi networks or 3G for faster loading. I have seen some complains about this app, but I tested it and I can say it works great. For a specific reason, it reminds me of Sopcast, too bad they don’t yet have an Android app.
3. HBO GO
Everyone has heard of HBO, and so, at one time or another, you have watched a movie or series from them. Now, you can watch your favorite shows directly on your phone, in high definition. You will need a 4G connection or a really strong Wi-Fi network to use this app. HBO is known to be an “elite” network so I am sure you will not be disappointed.
4. theChanner
You can now get this app for free on the Android Market. It streams TV fast, and with really nice resolution. If you are looking for something to pass the time, this app is perfect for you. Although, you do need a sturdy Wi-Fi or 3G network for it to stream seamless video, it is pretty data hungry.
5. Watch TV
This nice little app allows users to watch online TV with good fidelity, and it’s a good solution for those who do not have flash capability on their phones. If you are in this situation, you can use Skyfire for viewing. I hope in the future to see more channels, but until then, it does the job, and best of all, it’s free on Android Market.
6. DISH Remote Access
DISH is an Android app that is 50% iPhone! Confused? Well, let me clear it out for you, just like you can use the iPhone as a remote control, you can use the DISH app and your Android device as a remote for your DVR, you can search your TV guide, all of these plus the basic purpose of this app: to stream TV to on your phone. A really nice app, if you are into mobile TV, definitely give it a try!
7. Watch TV Free
As the name suggests, this app allows you to watch TV online completely free (no subscription or app price). What the name doesn’t suggest, is that it runs in high resolution. The flash player(required) has excellent fidelity and you ca view quite a few channels. The only thing that could be considered a minus on this app would be the lack on information for each channel. This app is also free on Android Market.
8. FUEL TV
All you sports fans out there, beware! FUEL TV is an Android app that allows you to watch 9 sport channels, read news, download ringtones or wallpapers, all of these via a free app from the Android Market. For all you skateboarding, snowboarding, motocross, surfing, BMX, rally car videos fans, FUEL TV will be a favorite!
9. Online Sports
This app is a TV streaming soft literally. It’s more of a medium where you see information about sport matches and news, and where you can find links to where you can view the channel that streams live the show. Using this method, I think is more reliable than the usual methods, so I recommend this app. You can pick up this app over at the Android Market for free.
10. Dopool TV
One of the biggest collections of online TV channels you can find, over 300 (yes, 300). What’s the catch, you ask? The catch is these are from China, so you might be interested in taking some courses before starting to watch them. Maybe in the future they will introduce English version, and by the looks of it, they will soon. However, many of the Chinese Android users will appreciate the existence of this application. These would be my pics for online TV streaming on Android, keep in mind this list doesn’t containt all the best Android apps for TV streaming, just some of the apps you can use. If you are interested in seeing how your favorite soap opera looks on a 4” screen, then you should give them a try. But be careful, if you want to try out these apps, be sure to keep a close eye on your internet traffic, they tend to be very data intensive.
